The renal system, also known as the urinary system, is responsible for filtering waste products from the blood and excreting them in the urine. It also helps to regulate blood pressure, fluid balance, and electrolyte levels.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that are located in the lower back, on either side of the spine. Each kidney is about the size of a fist. The kidneys contain millions of tiny filtering units called nephrons.

Nephrons work by filtering waste products from the blood and creating urine. Urine is a liquid that contains waste products, excess water, and electrolytes.

Renal issues can vary in severity, ranging from minor urinary tract infections to more serious conditions such as fluid-filled sacs (cysts), tumors, and kidney stones (Calculi). If left untreated, these conditions can progress to renal failure, which can ultimately result in death.
