Acne or Acne vulgaris commonly known as ‘Pimples’, is a skin condition caused by over activity of the glands that secrete oily substances on to the skin mostly on face, chest and shoulders. Around three-quarters of all teenagers and young adults suffer from acne. However, men and women in their 30’s and 40’s can also suffer.
Acne is characterised by the presence of black-heads, pustules with a depressed centre, whiteheads (comedones), inflamed spots (papules) and increased production of sebum (an oily secretion made by the skin) which leads to clogged pores.
Several factors are involved in the development of Acne:
- Central to this are the sex hormones, which are produced at puberty. The male hormone testosterone found naturally in men as well as in women triggers the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, making the skin greasier.
- Excess of sebum can clog the area around a hair follicle and the opening through the skin. Bacteria can thrive within the blocked pore causing inflammation, redness and swelling of a spot. In severe condition, the pocket of inflammation within a pore can rupture causing damage to the skin that can result in scarring.
- Drugs such as certain steroid tablets and some beauty products that block the pores can contribute to acne.
- Family history of allergy or allergy to some foods may lead to acne.
1) Acne begins in pilosebaceous units, which consist of sebaceous glands and a single hair follicle. The sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum.
2) Sometimes, hormones produced in the Adrenal glands trigger the production of excess sebum, clogging the follicle and leading to bacterial growth. The resulting plug can appear dark and is called a blackhead or open comedo.
3) If the plug is below the skin surface, it is called a whitehead, or closed comedo.
4) But, if the pocket of sebum and bacteria becomes too large, the follicle will rupture, spilling its contents into the surrounding tissue. These tissues are damaged when the body’s immune system attempts a repair, resulting in a papule, pustule, cyst or abscess.

Berberis aquifolium: For small pustules over whole body.
Kali bromatum: For Acne of face, chest & shoulders. Leading remedy in psoriasis.
Acne Aid Cream: The action of each ingredients of Dr. Bakshi ACNE AID Cream is as follows:
Berberis aquifolium (ext.): Improves nutrition, clears complexion. Indicated in Acne, blotches and pimples.
Thuja occidentalis (ext.): Unhealthy dry skin with brown spots and pimples gets cleared up. Helps to abort pustules and blotches.
Calendula officinalis (ext.): It is a popular homoeopathic antiseptic used to promote healing.
WARNING: PATIENTS ALREADY TAKING ALLOPATHIC MEDICINES PARTICULARLY STEROIDS SHOULD NOT DISCONTINUE THEM ABRUPTLY, BUT SHOULD GRADUALLY TAPER THEM OFF WITH CONSENT FROM THE DOCTOR.
There may be a homoeopathic aggravation in some very sensitive patients (10-15%). In such cases, medicine should be discontinued for 7-10 days and then restarted. If symptoms persist, worsen or recur frequently, consult a physician.
