Warts commonly known as Masse in Hindi, are non-malignant epithelial growths, developing as a result of infection of the skin with a filterable virus, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Warts are very common problem in children but can affect people of any age group & can occur on any part of the body. The various varieties of warts according to their shapes are plane, vulgaris, filiform, plantar warts etc.
Cause: Warts are probably passed from person to person, as a result of environmental pollution. The time from the first contact to the time the warts have grown large enough to be seen is generally several months. Warts occur more easily if the skin has been damaged in some way, which explains the high frequency of warts in children, who bite their nails or pick at hang nails. Warts on the soles are often contracted by walking bare footed on dirty surfaces or littered ground, where the virus is lurking. It is also common in people whose immune levels have declined either because of some medication or disease.
Manifestation: A common wart is hard, horny overgrowth on skin, flesh coloured or somewhat darker with a plane or cauliflower like surface. They are usually painless and the size varies from that of a lentil seed to a split pea. Commonly warts appear on the exposed parts like hands & feet, around & under the nails, in the beard area and in the scalp.
